Barraclough, Dennis

Town : Newport
Regiment : Gordon Highlanders, Infantryman
Landed in Normandy :
A founder member of the Island Branch of the Normandy Veterans Association, the late Dennis Barraclough, who lived in Newport, was a familiar sight at parades wearing his Gordon Highlanders Glengarry. Before his death some years ago Dennis told us how he, a Yorkshireman, came to serve in a highland regiment. He went over to Normandy as a field wireless operator with the South Staffordshire Regiment as part of the 59th Staffordshire Division. After bitter struggles for Caen and the Orne bridgeheads it was decide that there were too few reinforcements in Britain to make up the 40 per cent losses sustained by the division so the whole 59111 division was disbanded. Dennis himself had been wounded by this time. "A number of us ended up in the Gordon Highlanders as part of the 51st Highland Division,' he recalled. "'We were told that we were the first Englishmen to join the Gordons since its formation. We soon appreciated the value of more experienced officers, the majority of them having been at El Alamein and the Sicilian and Italian campaigns.'
